DOGE laid off thousands at the IRS as part of their efforts to reduce "waste, fraud, and abuse" in the US government. But the IRS itself *finds* waste, fraud, and abuse and *collects* money for the government. For every dollar spent by the IRS, it is estimated to return $5 to $12.

The layoffs came at peak tax season and included nearly 50% of the Large Business and International division, the IRS's most profitable division, which audits high-net-worth individuals and companies like pharmaceutical, oil and gas, and tech.
