Details
E Jean Carroll accused Trump of raping her in a department store in 1995/1996. Her allegations were published by New York magazine in 2019 alongside statements from two friends whom she confided in shortly afterwards. Trump released an official statement that he never met Carroll and the accusations were for financial gain or politically motivated.
The January 26, 2024 decision was in response to the first lawsuit brought by Carroll. A second lawsuit for battery and defamation was filed in October 2022 and the trial concluded in May 2023, which found Trump liable for defamation and sexual abuse.
The jury unanimously found that Trump was guilty of defamation and awarded Carroll $83.3 million.
