While campaigning, Trump repeatedly promised to end the Ukraine war "in one day". Four months into his presidency, Trump backed away from the talks saying that Russia and Ukraine would need to find a solution to the war themselves.

Trump had threatened Russia with sanctions if they failed to negotiate a ceasefire with Ukraine, but he has pivoted instead to normalizing trade with Russia even as other European nations impose sanctions.
