Trump posted an AI image of himself as pope shortly after the death of Pope Francis - May 3, 2025
Details
Pope Francis died on April 21, 2025. As the Vatican began the process to elect the new pope, Trump posted on social media an AI-generated image of himself as pope. The image was also posted by the White House account.
The New York State Catholic Conference condemned the image, saying “There is nothing clever or funny about this image. We just buried our beloved Pope Francis and the cardinals are about to enter a solemn conclave to elect a new successor of St. Peter. Do not mock us.”
Trump would claim he "had nothing to do with it" four days later, though it was unclear whether he was referring to the post or the generation of the AI image.
A few days before the image was posted, Trump stated "I'd like to be pope. That would be my No. 1 choice."
