After an election in the United States, each state sends a delegation of "electors" that cast the state's official votes for president. The Vice President presides over the count.

The indictment alleged that after the 2020 election, Trump and his co-conspirators:

1) Lied about voter irregularities to pressure state officials to change their vote count and/or electors, even though they knew their statements were false

2) Organized fake electors in seven states, who sent fake certificates to the Vice President

3) Pressured Mike Pence to accept the fake electors

4) Urged a mob to disrupt the electoral vote count and delay vote certification

After Trump was elected for his second term, the case was dismissed (with prejudice, meaning it can be refiled in the future), because the Department of Justice has a policy that a sitting president cannot be criminally prosecuted while in office.

A report by the special counsel stated "the Office assessed that the admissible evidence was sufficient to obtain and sustain a conviction at trial."
